In case you're interested...

I'm at Hopeful Parents today, trying not to rant about the day we were given Ethan's latest diagnosis of autism. We're all sick here, especially Ethan, so I'll write an update as soon as we're back on our feet. The short version is that we've got him started hearing again (although not up to previous levels) on the left side and the ride side might need to be taken out and a new device put in its place.

I'll have to go and read the post- sometimes parents have a right to rant (g).

Good news on getting the hearing a bit better in the one ear. What happened to the other side that might have to be replaced? Yikes!

Oh, Heather- I just read the article. I can't imagine being watched through a two-way mirror as a student delivered difficult news- it is just terrible.

I have my own concerns about IQ tests- Nolan has verbal processing issues, so he doesn't always answer questions appropriately. Especially questions delivered by a stranger (and he only has a moderate loss). So many of those tests are verbally biased.

*Hugs* and I hope you don't have to go through another experience like that ever again!

Heather,
Sorry to hear that you are all sick. I hope you are feeling better soon.
I didn't want to say this, plus I was dealing with Melanie, but the autism diagnosis seemed a bit premature, given all the hearing issues. How can they really get a true picture if he can't hear or really understand the testing due to not being able to process what is being given. I'm really glad he has a great team working with him. So glad they caught that hearing problem in that one ear, that can make such a huge difference in all areas. I can see why that would make him frustrated and cause behavior problems. This whole thing didn't make sense from the beginning and what an awful thing for you and Rich to go through. I have some more thoughts, but I'll let you get better first. Take care of yourself and I do care.

I am sorry to hear that an explant/implant may be in your future. I guess the only "good" part of that is the second time around it is so much easier. For us, it immediately solved the problem. Emmi has never again complained of pain on the left side, and she was back up to full function within weeks. Prior to the explant, she wouldn't even wear it all day!

Going to read your other post...

I am not sure that I knew he had been formally diagnosed with autism. I have quite a few friends with autistic children...do you need a support group?
What is going on with his CI? I hope it's not failing...what a setback :( (((hugs)))
You can e-mail me at sweetpea1971@gmail.com any time you need to vent. I am so sorry!
